Matters of Space / LA Show

This Saturday I’ll be showing some new work at Matters of Space in Highland Park, LA. For those of you in town, I’ll be flying out for the opening and would love to see you there! This new series is a set of mixed media collages entitled ‘Palimpsest’. Using discarded screen prints, digital collages, paint, ink, pastel and rice paper, each piece explores the idea of altered materials that still bear visible traces of their earlier form. I’ll also be showing six large scale collages from my Curiosities Series. Show details below.

Matters of Space
Saturday, March 14th 7 – 10 pm

Artsicle Featured on Small Empires

Small Empires is a new weekly show by The Verge that features rising NYC startups and gives behind-the-scenes access to how they got started. Earlier this week, Alexis Ohanian visited Artsicle founders Alex Tyron and Scott Carleton to discuss their business model and success in helping artists promote and sell their work. As Alex gets interviewed my piece “Line Series Monoprint No. 16″ from this series sits behind her.

Take a peek at the video to hear how the company first started and it’s plans for the future…

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Floral Watercolors & Textile Design

Over the past few weeks I’ve been really drawn to the watercolor studies of Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh (thanks for the heads up Nicolette!). Known mostly for his architecture and furniture design, I wasn’t aware of the work he created as a textile artist and water colourist. These pieces below are pulled from the online archive of the The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow. What an inspiration…

~ Textile Design: Tulip and Lattice / pencil and watercolour on paper 39.8 x 28.8
~ Textile Design: Rose and Teardrop / pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper (recto) carbon ink (verso) 25.5 x 25.4

~ Textile Design: Stylised Chrysanthemums 1915-23 /pencil and watercolour on wove paper 48.0 x 55.0

Textile Design: Flowering Bulb / pencil and watercolour on tracing paper 27.6 x 22.0
~ Textile Design: Bouquet of Flowers / black wash and pencil on brown tracing paper 30.3 x 23.5

~ Sketchbook of travels in Scotland and a tour to Kent: p. 20 Rose 1894 / pencil on paper 17.2 x 11.4
~ “Japonica” 1910 / pencil and watercolour on paper 25.8 x 20.0

~ “White Carnation, St Mary’s, Scilly” 1904 / pencil and watercolour on paper 25.7 x 20.2
~ “Larkspur” August 1914 / pencil and watercolour on paper 25.8 x 20.2

These five mixed-media collages were created this past May as additions to my Red Meets Blue series for a group show in Austin Texas. Having just returned from the gallery, I’ve made both the originals and limited edition prints available in my shop. Also available for short-term rentals at Artsicle. Below are some shots of the series set and an installation view. Hand Painted Florals for Textiles: Workshop with Helen Dealtry

This past Sunday, I attended a floral painting workshop offered by a very talented friend – Helen Dealtry. The five hour class was so much fun and covered a broad range of topics including: materials, painting from life, proper use of color for textile inks and heat transfer to fabric. The event was hosted in the beautiful workspace of floral designer Nicolette Owen and jewelry designer Fay Andrada in the Dobbin Mews studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Helen began the class by showing us some gorgeous samples of her past work for inspiration.

Next we were shown some brush techniques which Helen made look so effortless! That many years of experience can be pretty mind-blowing to watch first hand.

Color inks were introduced and quite a few hues were available to choose from…

Choosing a color palette took a long time for each of us considering that what you see on paper is a completely different end color than what transfers to fabric.

Here’s a little snapshot of my workstation before getting started…

And voilá, here’s my finished results (on paper)…

and on fabric …

It was great to watch everyone in the class go in different visual directions. Here’s a shot of Nicolette’s creation…

And Fay’s

and Heather Palmeri’s great work…

It’s insane how quickly five hours go by when your in your own little world of creativity and having such a good time. Let’s all encourage Helen to keep these inspiring workshops coming – I’m ready for the next one!

Two Times Elliott Prints

I came across these monoprints via printmaker Kate Gibb’s website and absolutely love them. She printed them for Two Times Elliott – a design consultancy based in Notting Hill, London that has an online shop. Was hoping to snag one but I’m too late – they’re sold out!
