Parsons Festival 2012

Next week starts the 2012 inaugural Parsons Festival featuring undergraduate and graduate work from students across a range of disciplines. I plan to make it to a few select openings (see favorites below). It should be an eventful few weeks of great emerging talent!

MFA DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION [AMT]

Saturday, May 05, 2012 – Sunday, May 20, 2012 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Opening Reception: Sunday, May 06, 2912, 7:00-10:00 p.m.

A two-week gallery exhibition featuring installations and performances, objects and apps, games and video, and interactive experiences that explore the dynamic role of technology in our current lives. These 80 projects represent a unique convergence of effort designed to explore issues related to technology–including its value. We invoke the playful, the informative, the employering, the critical, and the subersive to investigate emerging issues and provoke discussion. Students will discuss their work in a two-day symposium (on Tuesday, May 15, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at 65 West 11th Street, 5th floor, 7:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. at 55 West 13th Street, 2nd floor and on Wednesday, May 16 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at 65 West 11th Street, 5th floor). Please note the Kellen Gallery is open to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings. This exhibition takes place in two locations: 2 West 13th Street, ground floor, Kellen Gallery and 6 East 16th Street, 12th floor.

THESIS EXHIBITION—ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN, LIGHTING DESIGN, AND PRODUCT DESIGN – OPENING RECEPTION [SCE]

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

This exhibition of graduating students’ work includes drawings, models, and prototypes from the architecture, interior design, lighting design, and product design programs at Parsons. The exhibition takes place in the studio space created by the Parsons Design Workshop—its signature design-build program—where work desks and adjacent spaces convert to exhibition space.

COLORING FASHION: SEMINAR ON NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC DYE IN TEXTILES TODAY [FASHION]

Friday, May 04, 2012 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This one-day seminar and panel discussion brings together international experts from several fields to discuss economic, environmental, and socially sustainable improvements in the design of fashion and textile industries. This event is supported by grants from the Provost office Academic Events Fund and the School of Fashion, and is organized by faculty, Tamara Albu, David Goldsmith, and Luciana Scrutchen.
