FREE Art & Design Events (in NYC)

As I’m sure you know, it can be close to impossible to step outside your door in this city without spending a small fortune. A few students and colleagues have asked me recently about free art/design events in NYC that are still high in quality. So, I thought I’d share this list of a few of my favorites. (The problem is never what’s out there but finding time to get there.)

CreativeMornings is a monthly breakfast lecture series for creative types. Each event is free of charge, and includes a 20 minute talk, plus coffee.

The SVA MFA Design Criticism Department offers an extensive list of free monthly events on topics that range from ‘DIY Urbanism’ to ‘Fashion Theory’.

Parsons The New School for Design offers a full calendar of free art & design related events including panel discussions, guest lectures and exhibitions from it’s five individual schools: (ADHT) Art & Design History & Theory, (AMT) Art Media & Technology, (SCE) School of Constructed Environments, (SDS) School of Design Strategies, and FASHION.

New York University’s (ITP) Interactive Telecommunications Program hosts a great line-up of events that bring in speakers on the front lines of New Media Art with lectures that focus on things like ‘How to Start a Creative Revolution’ and ‘Setting Things on Fire With Lasers (And Other Things Nobody Taught You).’¬†RSVPs are usually required and seats fill up fast so be sure to book ahead.
